The best acoustic panels to reduce office noise

Open-plan offices were supposed to bring teams closer together. In practice, they mostly brought the noise closer. Overlapping conversations, ringing phones, chair casters on hard floors: sound bounces from wall to wall and nobody can hear themselves think. Acoustic panels solve that: instead of letting sound reverberate around the room, they absorb it. And for an office, the best panels are the ones that lower the noise level without turning the space into a padded room.

The short version. In a workspace where people spend their whole day, aim for a noise reduction coefficient (NRC) of at least 0.75. NRC is the average of what a surface absorbs across speech frequencies (250, 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz), on a scale from 0 to 1 (Acoustical Surfaces). A panel rated 0.80 absorbs about 80% of the sound energy that hits it. That's where you really start to hear the difference: less reverberation, conversations that no longer carry across the floor, meetings you can follow without straining.

The material matters too. Wood slats mounted on recycled PET felt (the construction behind our Acoustique Pro line) give you genuine absorption from the felt, plus a warm wood face that fits into a corporate interior without clashing. PET felt is made largely from post-consumer plastic (think water bottles), so it's a practical choice if recycled, low-VOC materials matter for your project or certification. One detail many people overlook: a small air gap behind the panel improves absorption at low frequencies, including ventilation noise and equipment hum (Second Skin Audio).

Office noise isn't just uncomfortable: it has a cost. Workplace research shows that noise and a lack of acoustic privacy rank among the leading sources of dissatisfaction in open-plan offices, with a direct impact on concentration (Gensler Workplace Survey). That doesn't mean covering every wall. In general, you target the large reflective surfaces: meeting room walls, collaboration areas, high-density floors. Need a layout plan? It depends on the room's volume and noise level, but for a workspace we generally aim for 15 to 25% of the wall area, sometimes including the ceiling. In a meeting room, treating two adjacent walls is often enough to break up the echo; in an open-plan office, the absorption is spread across the large reflective surfaces. The simplest approach: send us the floor plan and we'll work out the quantity.

Aim for 0.75 or higher. NRC is the average absorption across the four main speech frequencies, on a scale from 0 to 1: a panel rated 0.80 absorbs about 80% of the sound that hits it (Acoustical Surfaces). Mainly echo and reverberation within a room: they improve speech clarity and lower the ambient noise level, but don't reduce how much sound passes through a partition (Second Skin Audio). Blocking sound between two enclosed rooms (soundproofing) is a different discipline that calls for mass and airtightness. In an open-plan office, the problem is almost always echo, and that's exactly what absorption solves.

Yes. Noise and lack of acoustic privacy are among the top complaints in open-plan offices, and they directly undermine concentration (Gensler). Absorbing reflections lowers the ambient level: conversations carry less, video calls sound clearer, and the space becomes more comfortable to work in.

Our panels are tested to CAN/ULC-S102, the Canadian standard for surface burning characteristics (flame spread and smoke development), referenced in the National Building Code of Canada (UL Solutions Canada). That's an important consideration for buildings open to the public. The PET felt contains a high share of post-consumer recycled content and can be recycled at end of life.
