Open-plan was supposed to bring teams closer together. In practice, it mostly brought the noise closer. Overlapping conversations, ringing phones, chairs rolling on hard flooring: sound bounces off every wall and no one can hear themselves think. Acoustic panels fix that: instead of letting sound ring around the room, they absorb it. And for an office, the best panels are the ones that bring the noise level down without turning the space into a padded cell.
The short version. In a workspace where people spend their whole day, aim for a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) of at least 0.75. NRC is the average of what a surface absorbs across speech frequencies (250, 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz), on a scale from 0 to 1 (Acoustical Surfaces). A panel rated at 0.80 absorbs about 80% of the sound energy hitting it. That's the point where you really hear the difference: less reverb, conversations that no longer carry across the floor, meetings you can follow without straining.
The material matters too. Wood slats mounted on recycled PET felt (that's how our Acoustique Pro line is built) give you real absorption from the felt, plus a warm wood face that fits into a corporate space without looking out of place. PET felt is made largely from post-consumer plastic (think water bottles), so it's a practical choice if recycled, low-VOC materials matter for your project or certification. One detail people often miss: a small air gap behind the panel improves absorption at low frequencies, the kind that come from HVAC and equipment hum.
Noise at the office isn't just uncomfortable: it costs you. Studies on workplace environments show that noise and lack of sound privacy are among the top sources of dissatisfaction in open-plan spaces, with a direct effect on concentration (Gensler Workplace Survey).
